About the role

We are looking for a talented and service-oriented Bioinformatics Data Analyst to strengthen the bioinformatics unit of our interdisciplinary Scientific Computing Team.

You will be involved in a unique range of exciting bioinformatics projects and help wet lab biologist to answer their research questions by implementing robust and reliable tools/workflows and assisting them with comprehensive data analysis and results visualization.

This position allows you to deepen your bioinformatics skills and offers the great opportunity to get involved in projects related to image analysis and scientific software development.

This full-time, on-site position is based in Dresden, Germany.

Your Responsibilities

  • Developing scripts/workflows both to automate repetitive computations and answer biological questions raised by research scientists
  • Analyzing large biological datasets, primarily, but not exclusively produced from NGS experiments
  • Performing small-scale biological data analysis including orthology searching, domain annotations and phylogenetics
  • Visualizing and summarizing result to convey the underlying information in a clear and effective way
  • Advising researchers on appropriate bioinformatics techniques or statistical tests for their research
  • Teaching and training training of data analysis techniques and appropriate tools/programming languages to researchers on campus
  • Staying current with scientific literature and community efforts with regard to cutting-edge bioinformatics tools and techniques

Requirements 

Education & Professional Experience

A minimum of a Master's degree in Bioinformatics or a related subject in Life Science with demonstrated experience in a similar role with comparable goals and responsibilities.

Skills

  • demonstrated programming skills in R or Python and experience with the development of scripts and analysis workflows/tools including results visualization
  • experience with Unix and basic shell scripting
  • basic statistics and data literacy
  • solid background in molecular biology and genetics
  • demonstrated problem-solving skills and a strong attention to detail
  • excellent communication skills and the competence to explain complex information in an easy-to-understand way

Desirable Experience

As you will be working on a wide diversity of bioinformatics projects we would appreciate if you also have hands-on experience with at least three of the following topics:

  • RNA-Seq data analysis of bulk or single cell data (e. g. clustering, differential gene expression, gene set enrichment, trajectory analysis)
  • genome/transcriptome assembly and annotation
  • novel gene or protein annotation and characterization
  • protein structure prediction
  • phylogenetic reconstruction
  • analysis and interpretation of mass-spectrometry data
  • integration of multi-omics data
  • advances statistics & machine learning techniques

Moreover, it would give you a head start if you have experience with the analysis of large dataset including the usage of high performance computing as well as techniques to ensure reproducibility such as version control systems (especially Git).
